A major controversy has gripped several villages in Jharkhand, where tribal communities allege that forced religious conversions are taking place under the guise of “Changai Sabha”—healing prayer meetings. According to local villagers, people are invited to these gatherings with promises of curing ailments like knee pain, headaches, or eye problems, but later face pressure to change their faith. The issue has sparked anger among tribal groups, who see it as a direct threat to their cultural and spiritual identity.

At the same time, the Kurmi–Mahato community’s demand for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category has intensified, adding another layer to the state’s complex socio-political landscape. Their ongoing protests have highlighted deep-rooted questions about representation, historical justice, and recognition of tribal heritage.

In an exclusive conversation, social worker Pritam Sandh Lohra sheds light on the growing discontent among indigenous groups, the sensitivity surrounding religious conversions, and how these events are shaping Jharkhand’s identity politics. This ground report explores both the alleged conversion network through Changai Sabha and the broader movement for tribal rights and ST reservation — two intertwined battles defining the state’s current socio-political discourse.  वीडियो | Religion | Society
